YHA Arthur's Pass, Mountain House

YHA Arthur’s Pass Mountain House is situated in the alpine village of Arthur's Pass, right on the Main Divide of the Southern Alps, just two hours from Christchurch and ninety minutes from Greymouth on the West Coast.

YHA Arthur’s Pass backpacker accommodation consists of the main backpacker lodge set in the centre of town, a modern, heated suntrap with great views, visiting keas but still with a small hostel feel. Just opposite the Lodge is the historic YHA building with multi-share rooms perfect for backpacking groups. A mural by Cora Wilding, the founder of the New Zealand YHA, is a feature of this building. Finally, on the edge of the native bush on a quiet Arthur’s Pass street are the four early 1900s railway cottages converted into comfortable modern accommodation each with log-burners and a bottomless supply of firewood. These cottages can accommodate up 10 persons and can be to be booked soley for your private use. For more details and prices, email the hostel directly by clicking on the 'send an email' link.

The YHA Arthur’s Pass backpacker hostel is your tramping headquarters in Arthur’s Pass village where many of the spectacular walking tracks, such as Avalanche peak and Mount Bealey are within walking distance of our front door. We also operate a trampers’ shuttle to get you to tracks further afield such as the Cass/Lagoon and the Mingha Deception. During your stay at the hostel we can direct you where you might see the cheeky kea, the resident Arthur’s Pass mountain parrot, and assist you if you are interested in listening for kiwi. The YHA Arthur’s Pass hostel staff are experienced kiwi listeners and can give good instructions about where to go to hear these special New Zealand birds.

Special features at YHA Arthur’s Pass that backpackers love:

  • Wide range of unique, warm and modern backpacker accommodation in the heart of Arthur’s Pass alpine village.
  • Within walking distance to all of the main Arthur’s Pass tramps, including many beautiful day walks.
  • Knowledgeable hostel staff will help you to hear the New Zealand kiwi in the native bush and show you where to find the cheeky kea.
  • There are no TVs at the YHA Arthur’s Pass Mountain House hostel, just cosy reading or internet surfing areas, gorgeous views and the sound of the kiwi at night!
  • YHA Arthur’s Pass helps the local community by being actively involved in the Kiwi Community Recovery Programme, the Arthur’s Pass Fire Brigade and housing the local recycling scheme.
  • Wifi throughout and internet kiosks in the main building.

About Arthur’s Pass

Arthur’s Pass village is located in the middle of the South Island’s majestic Southern Alps and features a landscape of extremes with steep mountains, tumbling rivers and cascading waterfalls! Take the train from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass on the Tranz Alpine train, considered to be one of the world's great scenic railway journeys, and then hop on the shuttle bus to Greymouth.

With a high average rainfall Arthur’s Pass village always looks lush and green, perfect for taking dramatic alpine photographs. Depending on weather conditions, the mountains are accessible for walking, with a variety of short walks, day walks and multi day tramping tracks. Right next door to the YHA Arthur’s Pass hostel is the start of the Avalanche Peak track, which is often described as one of the best day walks in New Zealand. In the winter months many backpackers go skiing at the popular Temple Basin, Craggie Burn, Porters, Broken River or Cheesman ski fields.

Bird spotting is a popular Arthur’s Pass activity and the cheeky mountain parrot Kea can often be seen around the village. Kiwis live in the native forest surrounding Arthur’s Pass but are rarely seen. However, you can often hear them call out and the Arthur’s Pass hostel staff can guide you to some good kiwi listening areas.

I loved this hostel, it's very cosy. I stayed in the older part and I quite liked it that there was no tv, it makes people play games and read a book next to the fire. Very nice atmosphere, thanks!

HostelWorld.com, 22 January 2009

My partner and I stayed at Mountain House in January and were booked into House #2. The house had three bedroom and shared kitchen, toilet and living room. The house was spotless and well stocked with a CD player and a wood-burning stove. It was a nice place to cook a nice meal and relax by the fire. The two bathrooms were also spotless. Overall, this place exceeded our expectations and I would recommend it to anyone.
