About Anakiwa
Anakiwa is in the heart of New Zealand’s wonderful Marlborough Sounds with all its beautiful scenery, stunning bush walks and excellent array of water activities. Anakiwa, at the base of Queen Charlotte Sound, is the start (or end) point of the famous Queen Charlotte Track, which extends 71km up to Ships Cove. Queen Charlotte Track passes through typical New Zealand native bush, farmland and many coastal bays and is popular with both walkers and mountain bike enthusiasts. The YHA Anakiwa hostel is located only two minutes walk from the start of the Queen Charlotte Track.
Other locations to explore around Anakiwa and the Marlborough Sounds include Cullensville, an old gold mining settlement and example of the fascinating local history, only five minutes drive away. Nearby Havelock, the gateway to the Pelorus Sound and the Kenepuru Sound, is the centre of the mussel industry and offers local sightseeing, museum and cafes/restaurants.
Taking a cruise up Queen Charlotte Sound or a drive up the Kenepuru Sound are great ways to visit some of the remote and tranquil bays of the Marlborough Sounds. Take a picnic with you or catch some fish for lunch. Blenheim offers some 70+ vineyards for an interesting day wine tour and Picton offers an aquarium, movie theatre and day trips, fishing, dolphin watching or simply cruising the Marlborough Sounds. Both towns are a short drive from Anakiwa.
YHA Anakiwa Lodge is very centrally located, an ideal base to visit these many Marlborough Sounds attractions.
