About Rotorua

Rotorua - The heartland of New Zealand, spiritual home to the Maori and host to some of the world’s most incredible geothermal earth forces - Rotorua captures and celebrates all that is precious and unique about this remarkable country.

There are dozens of fascinating geothermal areas around Rotorua where you can see twenty-metre high geysers, bubbling mud pools and plenty of steam!

Relax after an action-packed day in a hot mineral pool or choose from a range of spa and massage therapies. Treat yourself while you’re in Rotorua.

Rotorua is New Zealand’s Maori cultural centre and there are many wonderful Maori tours and performances to be seen in Rotorua. Learn about Maori tradition, hear beautiful waiata (songs) and eat delicious hangi food – a meal cooked underground.

From white-water rafting and jet-boating, to tandem skydiving, downhill luge and the unique Zorb, Rotorua has adventure activities for everyone. For those backpackers who’d like to appreciate the natural beauty around Rotorua at a more relaxed pace then there are plenty of nature walks and mountain bike trails as well as lake kayaking and horse-trekking. For loads of family fun visit the Agrodome for their Sheep Show and farm experience.

Located in the scenic centre of the North Island in an area of beautiful native bush, volcanoes and at least 15 lakes, Rotorua is a short drive from Taupo, Tauranga, Hamilton and only 3 hours from Auckland. Rotorua is New Zealand’s first major tourist town so make sure you allow yourself lots of time so you can experience all Rotorua has to offer.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Rotorua

  • Rotorua is famous for geothermal activity: visit boiling mud pools, see towering geysers and soak in the hot mineral spas.
  • Experience the unique aspects of Maori culture – their traditions, music, arts and craft and delicious hangi (traditional feast).
  • Zorbing is the sport of rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball – sounds like fun? It is! This unique activity was invented in Rotorua, try it at Agrodome.
  • Experience the beauty of Rotorua’s unique bush and lake environments: go hiking, lake kayaking, horse-riding, wild-life viewing, bush walking or mountain-biking.
  • See the views of gorgeous Lake Rotorua from the gondola at the top of Mt Ngongotaha and while you’re there why don’t you try out the exciting downhill luge.
  • Visit the Agrodome for a fun hands-on experience with Kiwi farming, the opportunity to meet the farm animals and take part in our world famous Agrodome Sheep Show.
  • Go fishing for Rainbow or Brown Trout from one of the many lakes or rivers around Rotorua.
  • Sky dive for great views over Lake Rotorua and the surrounding lakes. From an altitude of 15,000 feet you are truly able to appreciate the drama of this unique geothermal region.
  • Visit the Buried Village, a Maori village which was completely destroyed by the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption in 1886 and which has now been excavated. A fascinating and emotional glimpse into the destructive power of volcanoes.
